2024 Capstone Project
This game is an assignment for our year long Capstone project, in a group with Drew Davies and Dylan Ye, we created Syndicate.
The brief for this game was to create a game with full creative freedom, we would make any game that we like with the knowledge we gained from the past two years.
The theme of this game was based on an abanonded orphanage in Grey Lynn, we took inspiration from the building as we were allowed to go visit it and see for ourselves what the atmosphere was like.
This is our final narrative storyline:
Narrative
In the late 1800s, an abandoned orphanage stands within the shadow of a nearby nuclear power plant. The orphanage was a sanctuary for the abandoned, the forgotten, and the lost souls of society. The orphanage was once a beacon of hope, but its fate took a sinister turn when tragedy struck. A catastrophic explosion at the nearby nuclear power plant sent toxic shockwaves through the orphanage unleashing radiation and chaos. The explosion mutated the orphan boys into creepy and malformed creatures. Among all the mutated chaos, a nurse emerges, one who had dedicated her life to caring for the orphans. She desperately tried to contain the chaos after the explosion, but in her vast efforts she fell victim to the toxic air. Trapped within the labyrinth of the halls of the orphanage, her body had contorted into a grotesque amalgamation of flesh. As the main player navigates the decaying halls of the orphanage, they encounter remnants of the past. Forgotten toys, faded photos, drawings on the walls, cryptic messages etched into the walls. Piece by piece, the tragic story of the orphanage is revealed, revealing the horrors unleashed by the nuclear explosion and the desperate struggle for survival that the orphans went through. The main character finds themselves drawn to the abandoned orphanage, guided by the whispers of their past and an inexplicable connection to the tragedy that unfolded there. The characters own mysterious past intertwines with the dark history, propelling them to propel on their journey of survival and self discovery. The power plant that is situated next to the orphanage is actually an experimental area disguised as a power plant. This experimental area uses the little boys in their experiments. The experiments that they do are still a mystery and the main character slowly finds out what happens, this organisation was known as “The Syndicate”. The organization sought to unharness the truth behind what is wrong with the orphan boys and why they are different. The main character is connected to this story, he harbours a deep connection with this building but has no idea why and wants to find out. His true identity is revealed as a spirit of the boy who made the nuclear explosion happen and technically save all the other orphan boys from years of suffering.
What was my role in the game?
I was the lead 3D modeller for this project, I also worked on level design, UI, narrative, Unity design, C# coding, lighitng and sound design.
I 3D modelled the 4 characters in this game, two of which were modelled in Maya, the other two were modelled in ZBrush. All were textured using Substance Painter.
I also was the lead environmental asset creator, most of these were made in Maya but I was teaching myself at this time how to use ZBrush so I tried to do more models in ZBrush. All of the models were textured in substance painter.
